🥊 What a powerful 1-2 punch looks like

Lessons from former NBA star Tony Allen on his very first game as a professional...

"(Coach) Doc (Rivers) told me (Tony Allen)."

He (Coach) was like, "Yo look at this (game) film. Who shot the first shot of the game?"

"I (Tony Allen) looked at the film" and said that, "I shot the first shot of the game. "

He (D0c) looked down (at the screen) and said, "You see that guy over there? That's Paul Pierce. He gets paid the big bucks. If you want to play on this court, you need to be doing everything he not doing. Playing defense, diving for loose balls, taking charges, and causing havoc on the defensive end. If you gotta shoot make sure the clock is under 4 (seconds)."

"I knew right then like I (Tony Allen) don't get no clear outs, we ain't running no 2-ISOs, screen deflects for TA, none of those types of options are for me. And it was right then and there I knew an adjustment had to come."

TL;DR

Lessons for Current Leaders

  1. Know where your people belong on the org chart.

  2. Recognize when to give feedback because it affects the team's purpose.

  3. When giving feedback, point them in the direction but let them conclude on their own how the best way to get there might be.

Lessons for Current Players

  1. Listen actively with team purpose in mind.

  2. Be accountable for your own job within the scope of the team's purpose.

  3. What you've accomplished (success and failure) in the past, has nothing to do with what you're trying to accomplish now.
