📈 Quarters for the rest of your life

Compound your network effects

Here are a few quotes from coaching sessions I've held.

  • “Man, I eat like sh)t though.” (So his eating habits don’t change.)

  • "I don’t want to pay that much per month for a gym.” (So he does no activity).

  • "I need to reach out to her.” (So that email has sat in her inbox for months at this point with no reply.)

Starting a new habit is hard.

As founders, our lives are very much about measurements and attributions.

Most of what we measure is tracked in 90-day increments.

Our lives are seemingly lived in quarters at a time.

  • I closed X deal this quarter because of Y.

  • We achieved Z milestone this quarter because of A.

  • Our pipeline fell by 25% this quarter because budgets are frozen.

However, you cannot directly measure the critical effect your network has on your success.

Just like your eating habits...Change one habit to start.

Just like paying for a fitness membership...I bet you can reallocate money from your budget to cover it.

Just like reaching out to someone in your network...Text, email, DM, Telegram, WhatsApp, drop a voice note, send a pigeon, or make a call.

The problem is we do something once and then forget for whatever reason to repeat that habit.

The effects on your network can be devastating.

Founders hold themselves to incredibly high standards.

It's important to not only start a habit but also to commit to it.

Whenever I try to start a new habit, I meet myself where I am.

I'm comfortable with not being the best in the world on day one.

I can't be an expert in your field today, and you can't beat me in my field.

But you and I can start learning about a new field today.

When I want to start a new habit, I simply try to do one thing for 30 minutes for 90 days.

It’s a commitment I can handle.

More often than not it sticks. If it doesn't stick, it's usually because I didn't like it. But I know I gave it a well-informed shot.

  • Once I wanted to work out for 30-60 minutes at 5 AM, which means I had to wake up at 4:30 AM. I made a goal of doing that for 90 days, and it lasted for over 3 years.

  • I wanted to stop drinking any sort of alcohol, beer, or wine. So, I started drinking sparkling water at night during the time I would normally have a drink. I’ve completed that challenge several times in my life with each lasting longer than 90 days.

  • I wanted to write every day. I put it on my calendar for 30 minutes per day every day for 90 days. So far I’m 16 days into this. Some of the posts hit. Some of them not so much. But I am having an effect on my network every day.

“The elementary mathematics of compound interest is one of the most important models there is on earth.”

- Charlie Munger

👆Compounding applies to your personal network too. Make a commitment to engage someone from your network every day for 90 days. See what happens.
